PM Modi unveils new criminal laws in Chandigarh

PM Modi launches implementation of three new Criminal Laws in Chandigarh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the full implementation of three new criminal laws in Chandigarh, calling it a proud moment for India as the country celebrates 75 years of the Constitution’s adoption. Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Modi said these laws represent a step towards ending outdated colonial-era legislation and aligning with the ideals of the Constitution.

Colonial laws replaced

The new laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—officially replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act on July 1, 2024. These reforms aim to modernize India’s justice system and remove the remnants of British colonial rule.

Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said the British-era laws were designed to suppress and exploit Indians, citing the 1857 revolution as a turning point in colonial history. Following that, the British introduced these laws to maintain control over India. He emphasized that the new laws reflect a commitment to justice, fairness, and progress.

Chandigarh leads in implementation

Chandigarh has become the first administrative region in the country to fully implement the new criminal laws. Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the Chandigarh administration for achieving 100% implementation and said the new system would ensure justice within three years of an FIR being filed.

Shah added that these laws make India’s justice system one of the most advanced globally, addressing contemporary challenges like cybercrime and organized crime while focusing on justice for victims.

During the ceremony, PM Modi and Home Minister Shah attended a live demonstration showcasing how crime investigations are conducted under the new laws. The Chandigarh Police presented modern evidence collection techniques and procedures, highlighting the practical application of these reforms.

This historic reform marks a significant shift in India’s legal framework, aiming to provide greater transparency, efficiency, and adaptability to the evolving needs of society.
